Destini Beard releases A Time Forgotten CD featuring music of Midnight Syndicate

Vocalist Destini Beard has just released A Time Forgotten, her full-length followup album to 2010's The Dark Masquerade EP. This time listeners' journey to a haunted Victorian hotel where dark secrets lie deep within the rooms' walls. Once again, the new CD blends Destini's haunting and alluring operatic vocals with the music of Midnight Syndicate.

From Destini Beard:
"This new album takes you back to the early 1900s, where a once-thriving hotel suffers a tragic fire and is lost in time. It's departed guests are trapped by an evil presence which controls their very souls. The story goes on to tell of a young woman from the present who is called from the spirit world to travel back to the hotel so that she can reunite with her departed true love. What comes next is a chilling turn into the unknown."

"Sonically, the CD is reminiscent of a short musical, with multiple layers of harmonies and counter melodies on each song. The recording process took much longer than 'The Dark Masquerade' but I feel the end product was worth every bit of it. There really is a good deal of variety with each song, taking you further along on the adventure."
A Time Forgotten also features an incredible dance industrial remix of Farewell Forever (Noctem Aeternus) from The Dark Masquerade EP. The remix was produced by Pat Berdysz of Encoder, whose credits include the Dead and Buried Remix of Midnight Syndicate's Graveyard from The Dead Matter: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Also included is the touching final track, My Last Goodbye, an original composition written and performed by Destini herself.

A Time Forgotten is now available at the Midnight Syndicate Store and at Destini Beard's website, www.DestiniBeard.com. To read an interview Destini did with Drive-In of the Dead about the CD, click here.

Updates on the next Midnight Syndicate and Destini Beard CDs posted

Midnight Syndicate just posted a Facebook update on their next CD.

"It's going to have a very classic horror theme to it (pre-30s, 30s, 40s, 60s, early-70s). Hammer Films have always been an inspiration for us but they played a huge part in the inspiration for this new release. The same goes for the Amicus, AIP, and European horror of that era (like Bava, "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie", "Blind Dead"). Also big are the classic black and white Universal horror from the 30s/40s ("Dracula", " Wolfman") and horror earlier than that. If you enjoy classic horror, the classic monsters, then we think you'll enjoy what we have in store for you. If I had to compare it to other discs, it has a very Born of the Night, Vampyre, and Realm of Shadows feel to it but the sound, is uniquely it's own (big, dark, at times epic). We wanted to continue to push ourselves both sound design-wise and music-wise after Carnival Arcane and we feel we've done that. Production is really far along, but unfortunately we don't have any more details right now as to a release date. We will continue to keep you informed though. Thank you again for the support!"
Production and Post-Production for Destini Beard's A Time Forgotten, the full-length followup CD to Dark Masquerade is complete. The new disc promises an immersive blend of Destini's haunting vocals and classic Midnight Syndicate tracks that together form an entirely new listening experience. A late June release date is anticipated. More details coming soon.

Midnight Syndicate to score Bunyan, first trailer released
The first trailer for the horror/creature feature Bunyan, directed by Gary Jones (Boogeyman 3, Xena, The Dead Matter), has been released by Kinetic Filmworks on their new website www.bunyanmovie.com. The film (due out in late-2012) will feature a soundtrack by Edward Douglas and Midnight Syndicate.

"We are excited about this first trailer and about the film," says producer Jeff Miller. "We've put a lot of time in to make the best film we could. It's been a labor of love - or as much love as you can have for a 15-foot-tall axe murderer. But we believe horror fans everywhere are gonna dig the finished product. We're also pleased to announce that Edward Douglas and Midnight Syndicate (The Rage, The Dead Matter) have come aboard to compose the score," Miller added.

Bunyan is a dark, contemporary take on the tall tale of lumberjack Paul Bunyan. Kids at a first-time offenders’ boot camp discover that the legend of Paul Bunyan is real, but is much more horrifying than they could have imagined. They incur the wrath of the 15-foot monstrous giant, who was banished from town 100 years ago and thought dead.

The movie stars genre vet Joe Estevez, Dan Haggerty (TV's Grizzly Adams), Tom Downey (SyFy's War of the Worlds), and Tim Lovelace (Mosquito). Amber Connor, Jesse Kove, Kristina Kopf (The Dead Matter), Cliff Williams, Victoria Ramos, Jill Evyn, and Chris Hahn round out the cast.

Bunyan is in post-production. It will be finished in the spring. Filming encompassed many locations in California, Ohio, and Michigan. Miller (Ballistica, Hellblock 13)and Jones are producing through their company, Kinetic Filmworks. Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps handled the bulk of makeup FX, with Kurtzman (From Dusk Till Dawn) joining the team as co-producer. More information is available at www.bunyanmovie.com and at www.kineticfilmworks.com.

More big accolades for Carnival Arcane from the horror press

This most recent batch of Carnival Arcane reviews include: Rue Morgue, Dark Beauty Magazine, and Halloween Overkill.

Halloween Overkill - "...so infectious that I simply cannot stop listening to it! Midnight Syndicate's use of sound effects mixed with their trademark orchestral sound is cranked up to maximum effect here, 5 out of 5 "Jolly Jack-O-Lanterns" and can officially say it is tied for first as my favorite Midnight Syndicate CD!"

Dark Beauty Magazine (#8) - "...sublime and perfect ...genius and altogether disturbing in the most amusing of ways."

Rue Morgue Magazine (#116) - "Those seeking more than the usual haunted houses and dark castles need look no further. Coulorphobics, however, probably should skip this ride. - 4 skulls"

Carnival Arcane receives accolades from the horror press

Midnight Syndicate's new Carnival Arcane has been getting incredible reviews from fans and press alike. Below are some new ones from the horror press. For a complete list of reviews, visit the Carnival Arcane REVIEWS section.

Apex Publishing - "...might be a high point in the band's already stellar and legendary career... What they have produced is a memorable album that blends historical realism with the recognizable fantastic elements that has helped make Midnight Syndicate one of the most popular instrumental-only groups in the world."

Darkest Radio - "...a triumph for Midnight Syndicate... up there with my favorites... 5 out of 5! Every carnival has a duality to it... Midnight Syndicate captures that duality perfectly. They harness the fantasy, the mystery, the sinister darkness, and weave it into a tapestry of unnatural phantasmagoria."

Bastards of Horror - "...beautiful but downright horrifying great music that is a must buy. 4 out of 4 stars."

Horror News - "...featuring beautifully sonic pieces of terror and mystery, 'Carnival Arcane' manages to haunt with a fun edge oozing evil clowns, sideshows and big top menagerie."

Sandman Cinema - "...Midnight Syndicate sets out to take 'listeners to the Lancaster-Rigby Carnival, a turn-of-the-century traveling circus with more than a few skeletons in its closet.' And they succeeded magnificently... a great story-telling CD that works on multiple levels."

Dr. Gangrene's Tales from the Lab - "I can't stop listening to it!"

Nightmare City Halloween Radio - "Another tour-de-force from Midnight Syndicate! ...their best work ever!"

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2011

More great reviews for Carnival Arcane from Halloween, haunted house, and amusement park press

More awesome reviews for the Carnival Arcane CD are pouring in! This recent group includes one from an amusement park aficianados viewpoint (Behind The Thrills) as well as ones from a haunted house, home haunter, and Halloween historian's perspective!

Behind the Thrills - "a very ambitious album that hits the mark every single time on every single track - keeping you guessing, and leading you down paths in ways you never thought Midnight Syndicate would take you."

Haunt off the Press - "Midnight Syndicate has another masterpiece on their hands with CARNIVAL ARCANE ... it truly is one hell of an adventure."

Terror from Beyond the Daves - "...this is a must-have for your collection! The music at times is genuinely creepy and yet manages to hold on to the charm that only circus music can provide!"

Halloween Alliance - "...an essential album to add to your horror collection and powerful mood music while celebrating Halloween... 'Carnival Arcane' continues their grand, masterful tradition of storytelling with music, but is even more ambitious than all others - both in the depth, grandeur and creepiness of the music, and in the well-researched and accurate representation of what it would be like to visit a slightly shabby, sinister circus from the Victorian era."

Check out a great new review for Carnival Arcane from the legendary Fangoria Magazine, here.

Carnival Arcane earns high praise across the board in first round of reviews

The first six reviews for the new Carnival Arcane CD are in. Thank you also to the fans who have emailed us and/or posted their comments on Facebook!

Rotting Flesh Radio #242 - "...an absolutely tremendous album! 5 out of 5! Midnight Syndicate has maintained their epic signature sound while continuing to grow musically."

Haunted Radio (review starts at 8:00) - "This is a must-have CD. Wow...unbelievable!"

Love-It-Loud - "...arguably their strongest album to date."

Drive-In of the Dead - "Gavin Goszka and Edward Douglas have done it again... a terrific 'soundtrack to an imaginary film' loaded with realistic turn-of-the-century sound effects and seriously sinister atmosphere. To be honest, I had my doubts (the) subject matter would be too narrow... (but) this IS Midnight Syndicate we're talking about. Who else could take a theme like a circus and completely turn it on its head? 'Carnival Arcane' exceeded my expectations."

Video Vault - "a creepy, fascinating take on the Carnival that begs your imagination to run wild... a great listen...already made its way to the top of my playlists ... Only King Diamond's themed albums such as 'Abigail' and 'Them' do as well of a job of telling a horror story through music and Midnight Syndicate does it repeatedly without singing. Quite a feat in my book."

Monsters From The Basement - "I enjoyed every second... From the minute you first put this CD in the player you are transported to another world... a very unique musical experience. Midnight Syndicate hit the nail right on the head."

First preview track from upcoming Carnival Arcane CD released
Midnight Syndicate has just released a preview track entitled Freakshow from the upcoming CD, Carnival Arcane, which will be released August 2nd. The song can be viewed below or on YouTube.

Edward Douglas had this to say "We had a difficult time picking a Carnival Arcane "preview" track as it's hard to single out any one track as being indicative of the CD. There's a lot of things going on in this one. The song we chose is Freakshow as we think it bridges some familiar elements with a taste of some of what's in store... Inspired by research, this track incorporates some of the more tragic elements of carnie life and the original freak shows as well as the macabre. We hope people enjoy it."

More kudos for Dead Matter and the soundtrack

We've just posted a new batch of reviews for The Dead Matter, including one for the soundtrack from Radio Casbah. To read the reviews, click here or the link below.

Nightmare Revue - "The sort of blending of Fantasy and Horror in "The Dead Matter" just isn't something you see much... a solid entry for Edward Douglas and Midnight Syndicate. It aims to do a little bit of everything and is actually able to succeed."

Radio Casbah - "the musical fiends at Midnight Syndicate have always done it right. And you, my friends are in for a treat. Great god. Take a deep breath and sit back. Alone playing in the background, the music's scary enough. Just add a vivid imagination, and you'll be set for quite a while."

MantaRay Pictures (Terry Wickham) - "very entertaining... It's ambitious for a low-budget film and Writer/Director Edward Douglas pulls it off... plays like something made from another era of horror because of it's unique qualities..."

Cult Cuts Magazine (SPOILER ALERT) - "a fun genre film that does something a little different with some old standards... it is the music that is by far the strongest element... the soundtrack is lush and at times borderline epic. Hearing it certainly makes one think about how great it would be to see Douglas and his crew helm a period piece (though that might be the Hammer fan girl in me)."

The staff at Drive-In of the Dead give The Dead Matter some serious love!
The guys at Drive-In of the Dead are fans of Midnight Syndicate - but admitted to us they were unsure how it would translate to film. What was their verdict?

Drive-In of the Dead - "...The clever plot, the gnarly make-up, the perfect score (that had many nods to Midnight Syndicate's past), and a healthy mix of b-movie charisma make this film a refreshing change from the usual horror schlock that Hollywood churns out. It's always a thrill to see when a group of filmmakers 'get it.' For me, the dead definitely matter!"

If you haven't stopped by the Drive-in yet, you're in for a real treat. A unique, well-crafted horror site. Be sure to swing by the Snack Bar and check out the Scream Queen of the Week!

Benevolent Street gives high praise for Edward Douglas and The Dead Matter
The horror writers at Benevolent Street have just given The Dead Matter an excellent review citing strong sound, music, production values for an indie film, and story.

Benevolent Street - "...a very interesting and well blended smoothie of zombie and vampire goodness... the sound is amazing. The twists, visuals, occassional humor and sound are enough to keep the viewer interested from start to finish... Having already tackled the musical side of the horror genre... it should be no surprise to see Douglas climbing the ladder in the horror industry as a director. "The Dead Matter" can be considered a terrific start."

[[Comment from Edward Douglas - "Producer Gary Jones and UPM Phil Garrett deserve a lot of credit for squeezing what we could out of the budget and putting it up on the screen. Patrick Giraudi of Virtual Mix handled post sound and delivered the goods in a huge way."]]

Major props for The Dead Matter from Xomba's Horror Channel

The Dead Matter has just received a great review from the writers at Xomba's new Horror Channel. Check it out here.

Xomba's Horror Channel - "Douglas has managed to brilliantly craft a horror fest with gore, humor and most importantly, a unique depth that many low-budget films lack entirely... The characters in 'The Dead Matter' are well-rounded, and the movie's fast pace allows it to take the viewer for a spooky ride, throwing in some laughs here and there... (Douglas) does a fine job transforming his creative mind for music into a breeding ground for horrifyingly new ideas to bring to the horror genre's plate."

The Dead Matter gets kudos from Hayes Hudson's award-winning horror blog and B-movie critic/horror writer, Nic Brown

Hayes Hudson's House of Horror - SPOILER ALERT - "...a great film and one that is definitely going into my collection... visually beautiful... acting is top-notch. I can't recall the last time I saw vampires and zombies in the same film, but director Edward Douglas does a fantastic job of weaving them both together in the story."

B-Movie Man - "...stands out amid the myriad field of zombie horror. The film mixes in a touch of humor with its gore, but doesn't go over the top looking for laughs... a fusion of the zombie and vampire genres (with) unexpected twists..."

Two great reviews for The Dead Matter from Macabre Mansion and 28 Days Later Analysis

Macabre Mansion - "This film breaks all the rules when it comes to the crap that Hollywood has been producing for years now. It's not all blood, guts and gore (or) a collection of mind numbing fast cut scenes that will make you want to claw your eyes out... a fantastic supporting music score... from beginning to end this film tells a story...actors do a top-notch job... filmmaking at it's finest."

28 Days Later Analysis - "Totally enjoyable. The details have really gone into the production and the result is extraordinary... this reviewer encourages you to get your bloodlust fix in this well-written, well-orchestrated and comedic production. Totally enjoyable... here is one strong vote for more material from Douglas and his company Midnight Syndicate Films."

Horror News has just posted a tremendous review of The Dead Matter. NO SPOILERS here...just a lot of good reasons to check out the movie and a very entertaining read!

Horror News - "Good old fashioned storytelling here, folks...multiple story arcs and conflict-ridden characters all very well written and all coming to a believable culmination by the time all's said and done.... It defies every single page of the current Hollyweird rulebook of horror moviemaking by being neither a remake, a former TV show, nor edited in today's standard quick cut Super Hi-Meth mode - it's an actual story unfolding right before your very eyes... a modern Hammer film!"

The Dead Matter goes on sale tomorrow at Hot Topic stores nationwide and online at the Midnight Syndicate Store, HotTopic.com, and Amazon.com. Here's what the press are saying...

Movie Crypt - "From twisted dream sequences to impressive displays of supernatural power, you can't help enjoy a movie that gets so much of the genre right (when so many get it wrong) while still managing to pull a few new rabbits of the old hat. The Dead Matter is a love letter to horror devotees as well as to Midnight Syndicate fans..."

FEARnet - "...fast-paced and full of memorable moments. Midnight Syndicate always set out to provide a spooky good time with their music, with no other pretensions, and their first venture into filmmaking reflects that same spirit. It all makes for a solid debut, and I'm already looking forward to their next outing."

House of Horrors - "...an effective, blood filled addition to zombie lore while offering an interesting story twist that keeps you watching till the very end.... The Dead Matter is home grown down and dirty horror made by folks that simply love it, appreciate it and respect it. You can't ask for more than that... (also) Easily one of the best "special feature" packages that I have seen in a while."

Bastards of Horror - "a clever entertaining mix of horror, fantasy, and mythology ... a must have."

Check out exclusive never-before-seen photos of Midnight Syndicate from their recent music video shoot on Facebook. While you are there be sure to become friends on Facebook as there will be a lot more announcements in the next several weeks including where you'll be able to check out the video!

The shoot which wrapped this past weekend was a complete success, leaving Midnight Syndicate and everyone involved extremely excited about what this first music video will deliver for fans. "It's going to be awesome. Dave has incredible vision and the great team of artists at Precinct 13 and Screamline really delivered for us," said a beaming Edward Douglas.

The video was shot over two days (March 6-7, 2010) on a combination of Digital and Super 8mm film at the old
    Phantasy Theatre
in Lakewood, Ohio a suburb of Cleveland. Built in 1917, the Homestead Theatre (as it was originally called) played films through the 1980's when it switched over to hosting live concerts like Psychadelic Furs, Peter Murphy and Nine Inch Nails. The building has a long history of hauntings reaching back into it's early years which made it the perfect location for the shoot. Midnight Syndicate also has a history with the Phantasy, as it has hosted all of Midnight Syndicate's local CD release parties in the adjacent Phantasy and Chamber Night Clubs.

On hand with director David Greathouse were the incredibly talented artists at Precinct 13 Entertainment/Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps assisted by Screamline Studios and a talented group of haunted house actors from the region. Also making appearances in the video were fellow Cleveland music legends "Schmotz" and Jeff Hatrix of Mushroomhead (pictured to the left). Members of the Mushroomhead stage crew were also on hand to orchestrate the grand finale of the video.

Between the music video, the new websites, and contests Midnight Syndicate fans have a lot to look forward to BEFORE July 30th - and there are STILL more huge announcements coming before then! Don't miss a thing. Be sure to become friends with Midnight Syndicate on Facebook!
